Personal Statement
A time in my life where I faced Challenges was in a basketball game. In the summer time I
played with the foothills Christian basketball team. I was calling up huddles and encouraging
my teammates. I had broken my wrist and came back to play at a later date. When I came back to
play later I no longer took the authority that God had given me. I had fallen back into my shell
and had stopped commanding the game. We went on a bad streak where we had lost to a bad
team and then we got popped by 30. This loss was a wake up call for me that I need to lead this
team and that we cannot afford for me to be in my shell. I had learned that I didn’t do anything
wrong by breaking my wrist, I can and should be myself. I also learned that just because my
teammates and I have conflict, we are able to move forward and actually grow closer.
Justin Hawkins has had a significant impact on my life. To start I will say he has shaped me by
giving me a foundation of Jesus. Hawk is really the person who I would attribute to me saying
yes to Christ and It has changed my life completely. Hawk showed me what no other coach or even person had. He had welcomed me into his house and made it more than basketball. Coach Hawk showed me that it is who you are and the inside which needs to be established before any external accomplishments should be reached. Some things that have changed in my life since
having Hawk as a coach include not listening to rap music and now listening to gospel. I also
have adopted a kingdom mentality that It is not me who will work myself to greatness, but God
who blesses me. I have learned to be vulnerable, as before the most vulnerable thing you would
get from me was a deep breath.
A topic or idea that captivated me so much that it makes me lose track of time is greatness,
specifically in training and sports. I can easily get lost in thinking about what it takes to be great,
the purpose of being great, and all the emotions attached to greatness. For example I was at the
airport today and I was watching a documentary about Serena Williams called In The Arena.
When I was watching it I felt the same emotion that Serena felt while going through the ups and
downs. I loved being in that mind state and I didn’t want to leave. I used to spend 6 hours at the
gym because I just wanted to become great and it was such an obsession that it would actually
harm me by getting to bed late, and not eating etc.
The qualities and accomplishments that I would bring to a potential employer would be a person
who is dedicated to his craft and wants to get better. I bring a skill of listening and trying to
complete a task with excellence. With the work that I do I want to make an impact and so the
intention of my work would be to help others. I would also bring a positive attitude as I realize
that some things need to be done even if you don’t like them. I really would want to be my own
boss so I would bring a sense of independence where the boss can have me manage my own
thing and won't have to stress about micromanaging me. My goal of working would be more of having an impact and helping others; and so there wouldn’t be the problem of money or power
